De-Ionized Spring Water is used as a solvent for active ingredients in skin care cosmetics and other personal care products.
In skin care formulations, this water is commonly referred to as “Aqua” and it also serves as a spreading agent. It is therefore an important ingredient that you are likely to find listed as the first ingredient in virtually all types of cosmetics and personal care products.
In certain instances, water may comprise 50% of the formulation which means that the quality of content becomes of vital importance to the end product.
De-Ionized Spring Water – How It’s Made
Also referred to as demineralized water, de-Ionized spring water is water that has been purified through a chemical filtration system. During this filtration process, mineral ions including calcium, iron, sodium, copper, bromide and chloride are removed.
On the other hand, distilled water is collected through a process of evaporation and is believed to still contain trace mineral elements. As a result, de-ionized water becomes extremely purified and better than distilled water for use in the production of cosmetic products.
Plain tap water is not good enough for use in cosmetic products as it contains minute quantities of elements such as sulphates, chlorine and a variety of metal ions that could interfere with the performance and stability of the product.
It is for this reason that most companies today turn to purified water that has been physically processed for the removal of impurities. Only water that has been freed from toxins, microbes and pollutants is ideal for use in skin care products.
